Obverse

BANK OF BOMBAY in centre and BOMBAY in Central Promise text panel. Promise text in four quadrants – clockwise from top left- Sindhi, Persian, Marathi and Gujarati. Printed serial number within central promise text panel on either side. Manuscript date with printed year 18xx in centre above promise text panel. Denomination in numerals in four corners in Persian, English, Marathi and Gujarati. Marathi and Gujarati in the lower panel with ‘Ru’ before the denomination. Different ornamental denomination panels for different denominations in lower left. Manuscript signature Entd. by Accountant and Secy. and Treasurer for the Bank of Bombay. Printed on watermarked wove paper by Perkins Bacon & Petch, London using patent hardened steel plate.

Reverse

BANK OF BOMBAY on top line and denomination in words in English in centre and Promise text in Arabic in lower line.

Watermark

BANK OF BOMBAY on top in English and ‘Mumbai ni Bank’ in Gujarati below within a rectangular frame.

Note

  1. 1. The practice of manuscript numbers on either side of the note in Gujarati was prevalent in early banknotes as they were cut in half and were sent by post for security reasons. On acknowledgement of receipt of the first half, the second half of the note was also sent by post. These were then joined together for encashment.
  2. ‘Value received’ beside denomination in words in Promise text panel.
  3. Manuscript serial numbers are written in black or red ink.
