1st issue Green underprint with four serial numbers (1899-1930).
Demonetised on 12 January 1946.
GOVERNMENT OF INDIA in centre. Two serial numbers in top corners and two on lower corners. Two sets of mirrored dates on either side and the circle of issue below language panel. The language panels are below promise text. Denomination panel are on either side. 10,000 / RUPEES in an octagon in top corners. FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA in a panel on lower left with the signature to its right. Green underprint of irregular ovals under serial number and large 10,000 in the middle.
Paper
White, handmade; moulded. The mould consisted of two notes which were cut vertically dividing them. The cut or the sharp edge is either or left or right, the other three edges are uneven or deckle edges.
Watermark
Type 1 (upto 1909): Wavy lines within a wavy rectangular panel. INDIA in centre and OVERNMENT OF INDIA below. Vertical RUPEES inverted on either side. Plate number in an alphabet in lower left and week and year of manufacture in four digits on lower right.
Type 2 (from 1909): Same as type 1 except ‘10,000’ replaces ‘INDIA’.
Issuing Circles
4. This Type was also printed and issued for Calcutta, Cawnpore, Lahore, Bombay, Kurrachee, Madras and Rangoon.
Note
The notes of this denomination were mostly used by the Banks for reserve cash and were not in general circulation. These notes were replaced with notes of entirely new design in February 1931. This is the only denomination that has four serial numbers throughout.
